Biographical Notes

William was born in Temuka 24 September 1882, the eldest of five sons and 3 daughters, of Andrew and Helen Jane Webb nee Waddel of Princes Street Temuka. In June 1906 at Christchurch, he married Theodore Robina Goy and they had three children, Mabel Matilda 1906, William Carl 1907, who died at 2 months, and Dorothy Helen 1909. William was a member of the Temuka Territorials for 12 years and a keen rifle shooter. William attended many local and national shooting events and was the winner of numerous competitions and medals. Cycling was also one of his interests. Prior to enlisting, William was employed by the NZ Government at Penrose as a Leading Line Erector and his wife’s address was care of Mechanics Institute Temuka. He was described as being of fair complexion, chest 39 inches, 12 stone in weight, 6 foot in height, eyes blue, hair brown and having good teeth. He was attested in Auckland on 10 September 1914 and served in NZ from 11 September to 15 October 1914. He embarked from Auckland for Suez, Egypt on the Waimana on 16 October 1914, arriving 4 December 1914. William was killed in action on Gallipoli 2 June 1915 and is buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery. After the war his wife was sent his medals, scroll and plaque. Two other brothers also served overseas. 12/1123 Private Gordon Henry Webb, Auckland Battalion, who was invalided home from the effects of Gallipoli in April 1916, and 9/101 Sgt Alexander Elder Webb, Otago Mounted Rifles, who was invalided home from France on the Remuera May 1918.
