Biographical Notes

Son of late James WADE & Winifred (Mrs HARNETT), of Fairlie. Brother William died of wounds in 1917; brother Edward James also served in WWI & was fighting on the Western Front at the same time as Willie & Joe. Joe had to have a leg amputated in early 1917. He was seriously wounded while taking part in the Messines battle and underwent a severe trial. Both legs were smashed with shell, one leg having to be amputated and the other broken in two places. Only the skill of the sugeons made the broken leg sufficiently strong for him to use crutches. He went to England to have an artificial leg fitted. While all this was happening to Joe, his brothers Edward and William were in France. Joe was in hospital when his brother William died in October 1918.
