Biographical Notes

David was son of William and Mary Ann (nee Ely) Tooley, born on 28 December 1882.

A family historian, B Gunn, has established that David's father, William, came to New Zealand with his mother and stepfather. William worked on farms in the Oamaru area, including shepherding at Totora Estate, prior to moving to the Pareora/St Andrews area about 1884. There he worked on the Pareora Estate for the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, becoming head shepherd by 1888. Later it seems William owned land in the Temuka area, with one newspaper report in 1908 noting that he and his son David purchased land from Mr J Holwell, indicating he too had moved to the area. In 1910 another report noted William won a tender to lease 15 acres within the Domain from the Temuka Borough Council (Timaru Herald 25 May 1910, p.6)
