Seriously wounded by a German grenade during the Battle of Messines. Wounded on 19 May 1917 at Messines; admitted to Walton-on-Thames Hospital on 23 May 1917, suffering from shrapnel wound to right thigh. Admitted to Brockenhurst Hospital in July 1917.

Biographical Notes

Son of John & Jane (nee DAY) SULLIVAN of Albury. Brother John Arthur SULLIVAN also served in WWI. Educated at Te Ngawai and Albury schools. Vic married Eileen ANGLAND in 1935; they had five sons and three daughters. He and others were farewelled at the Albury Public Hall in September 1916; Vic replied on behalf of the departing soldiers and thanked the speakers for their complimentary remarks and handsome presents. He was already in France when he celebrated his 19th birthday. His true age was made known when he was recuperating in an English hospital in 1917 and the surgeon happened to have been the family doctor back home in South Canterbury. After the war Vic continued his role in the army and spent several months with the New Zealand contingent attached to the army of occupation in Germany. he was a keen member of the RSA and was active in establishing a branch at Albury. He was made a life member of the Mackenzie RSA.
