Biographical Notes

Son of John and Bridget SULLIVAN. Brother John Burtman SULLIVAN was killed in action in 1916. Another brother, Michael SULLIVAN, also served in WWI. Prior to enlistment he had been rejected for the 1st Expeditionary Force. Like his brother Michael, Patrick Joseph was among the first to enlist. He served throughout the war, from 1914 to 1919, a total of 4 years 102 days (only 124 days not overseas), to be discharged in April 1919 as physically unfit for war service. He embarked on 17 February 1919 from Liverpool for return to New Zealand per Ajana. Several times during his service he fell foul of the authorities - in 1915 he forfeited one day's pay for neglect of duty; in 1917 he forfeited pay for overstaying leave; in 1918 he was deprived of a Stripe for gambling; in 1918 3 days C. B. for being absent from parade.
