Biographical Notes

Acting-Sergeant G. A. E. Smith, previously listed as wounded on September 15, and now reported killed in action, left for the front with the Second Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. Born in Ashburton, he spent the greater part of his life here, where he took an active interest in all sport . He was at one time on the staff of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association, and at the time of enlisting was in the employ of Mr H. A. Lloyd. Acting-Sergeant Smith was 27 years of age, and was married a few months prior to his departure for the front. His brother, Sergeant B. A. Smith, is on active service in France.
