16 September 1916 wounded in the head (scalp), leg, and buttock, in France; Joseph cabled that he was doing well. In December admitted to hospital at Chelsea, London. 12 May 1917 admitted to Walton-on-Thames Hospital. 14 June 1917 transferred to Hornchurch; 15 July transferred to Walton-on-Thames. 31 July 1917 advice to return to N. Z. at early date. Classified exempt by Medical Board and placed on NZ Roll.

Biographical Notes

Third son of Frank and Jane Sarah (nee TUTHILL) SANDERS, of Temuka. Brother Thomas Alfred SANDERS was killed in action in 1916 in WWI. Educated at Rangitira Valley & Temuka schools. 14 July 1917 he embarked at Avonside for N.Z. per H.S. Marama (Hospital Ship). On his return to New Zealand Joseph was put in the care of Waikato Hospital. He also applied for a War-Service Gratuity. On 14 November 1960 the War Pensions Office decided that his death was due to his service with the Forces. on 5 April 1937 Joseph acknowledged receipt of a New Zealand Service Medal for long and efficient service in the New Zealand Military Forces, which he had applied for. In his pre-war military service and with N.Z.E.F. he gave a total of 12 yrs 36 days of continuous efficient service. He had already received in 1936 a regulation issue ribbon. Of good character (1917). Joseph married Ruby Ida LOTT in 1918 .
