Biographical Notes

Son of Andrew and Jessie Paul, of Waimate, South Canterbury.

A descendant, Lester Paul, recounted that as far as the family knew Henry Paul didn’t have a sister (as listed for his enlistment NOK), but they understand this may have been false as Henry enlisted without telling his family. Other documents give Henry's brother, William Gardener Paul, as his NOK. In later years (the 1960s?) Henry’s ‘Dead man’s Penny’ was returned to the family after it was brought to light by an unrelated pupil in a school classroom. The pupil’s family had previously found it in their garden.
