Hospitals, Wounds, Diseases and Illnesses

1918 in hospital - wounded in the head. On 1 October 1917 his unit had moved to the frontline near Zonnebeke, & he was shot in the head in an attack on Broodseinde Ridge; wound behind left ear & headache on exertion. Headaches continued into 1918. October 1917 first admitted to Field Hospital. Sent to 55th General Hospital near Boulogne, France, then evacuated to England. On 11 December 1917 he was admitted to the Northampton War Hospital, Duston, Northampton, England, suffering from a severe gunshot wound to the head but improving. At hospiital in March 1918 he was diagnosed with disease of framework of the nose. In April 1918 he was hospitalised in England for 2 months with swelling and tenderness from a long-standing injury to the left knee.

Biographical Notes

Son of Dennis & Catherine (Kate) KELLY. Both parents died when he was very young. Brother William served in the NZ Forces & was killed in action in 1917 & brother Andrew also served in the NZ Forces. Enlisted at Victory Barracks in Sydney, NSW, in 1916. Prior to that he was a carpenter working at Duntroon Military College, ACT. Farewelled at the Triumph Hall in Queanbeyan on 6 November 1916. . From July 1917 he was serving with the 34th Battalion on the Western Front in the vicinity of Messines in Belgium; on 1 October they moved to the frontline near Zonnebeke where he was shot in the head. After recovering in England, he met & married Hannah Hilda BLATT at Bethnal Green on 10 December 1918. They returned to Sydney in August 1919. Died by 1968. See also BIO of Andrew.
