SonĀ of James Albert and J.M.Hanan of 177 Leet Street Invercargill. Two sons, Leonard Carswell Hanan (no.3/2641) and James Albert Newton Hanan (no.8/403) died as result of war service.

The family where originally from Invercargill, but spent significant time in a home they had in Beverley Road, Timaru.

"The death is reported from Dunedin of Sergeant Leonard. C. Hannan, son of Mr.J. A. Hanan, formerly of Timaru, and a nephew of Hon. J. H. Hanan, as the result of illness contracted on service. Before leaving for the front the late Sergeant Hanan was secretary to Dr. Valetine, Inspector-General of hospitals and later he was a journalist including Timaru."
