Biographical Notes

Fred Hawdon Davey was the sixth son of William and Caroline DAVEY, of James Street, Timaru. His brother Oral Edgar DAVEY was killed in action in 1915 at Gallipoli. Fred was wounded at the Dardanelles about the time that Oral was killed. Fred enlisted at Feilding at the outbreak of the war and left with the first force. He returned to Timaru in September 1915 by the Tahiti, having been wounded by a bullet in the leg and left lame. Fred gave 25 years of service in the employ of the Timaru Borough Council, primarily as rates clerk, and his comprehensive knowledge of land and its value was acknowledged at his death in 1946. He was also an enthusiastic sportsman, being involved in rugby, harriers and bowls, He was a vestryman at St Mary's Church where his funeral service was held, and he was a member of the Court Southern Cross Lodge. Fred was a foundation member of the Timaru Returned Soldiers' Association in Timaru. Fred married florence GRANDI in 1918 and was survived by Florence and one son, Derrick.
