Biographical Notes

Cyril, born on 27 August 1895 in Geraldine, was the youngest son (of seven children) of Benjamin and Charlotte Bartrum of Fairlie. The Bartrium's farmed at Raincliff. Cyril was educated at Skipton School in 1904 befoire going on to George Street School in Dunedin. There he was entrusted into the guardianship of a Mrs Patrick of 3 Albany Street. He later attended Waitaki High School.

The Bartrum's appear to have moved to Wanganui, where Cyril's father was killed by a falling tree in 1910. On 8 May 1915 the Wanganui Chronicle reported his enlistement the previous day. He gave his occupation as a farmer at the time, as he was working for his broither at Matahui on the Wanganui River.

The New Zealand Herald, on 27 September 1916, repotted that: "Rifleman Cyril Fredericl Bartrum reported wounded in the recent offensive, was educated at the Waitaki Boys' High School, and liter followed farming pursuits, joining the Rifle Brigade from Wanganui early in 1915. He was an excellent swimmer, and 20 years of age. His brother, Mr. J. A. Bartrum is, lecturer on geology at the Auckland University, and his parents have for some years resided in Fairlie, South Canterbury." Cyril had initialled arrived in the Suez in May 1915, and served in the region until April 1916 when he had been transferred to France. He recovered, and after a stint in a convalescent hopital in England, returned to his unit in early 1917.

On 5 April Cyril was serving at the Somme where he was killed in action. He was buried at the Euston Road Cemetery, Colincamps, near the battlefield.

One of Cyril's brothers, Oswald, also served overseas, returned safely home from the war.
