Biographical Notes
Son/stepson of Jeremiah and Ellen Tangney. Thomas (Tom) was mentioned in a Timaru Herald report of 21 May 1918 regarding his step-brother, William, as having been lost in the "Braemar Castle disaster", (a hospital ship hit by a torpedo or mine in 1916), stating he was in the Dublin Fusiliers. However there appears to be no record of a Thomas(Tom) Tangney and only two people were recorded as having died on the Braemar Castle, neither being Tangney.
Note that Jeremiah and Ellen Tangney emmigrated to New Zealand on the Soukar on 24 Jan 1879 from County Kerry, aged 28 and 20 respectfully. They had no children on board and no birth record has been found for Tom (Thomas), but Jeremiah was fined for "neglecting to register the birth of a child" (Timaru Herald 24 march 1887). In addition Ellen is buried in the Temuka Cemetery, having died in 1882, aged 25, only five years after emmigrating to New Zealand.
Thomas had several step-brothers that also served: Francis Patrick, Walter Bernard (aka Walter George), Robert Edward, Patrick William, and William Patrick.
