Your Museum is a great place to explore our heritage these holidays. Come and experience our new exhibition space upstairs called “Times of Change”. There are fascinating things to see and discover, a fun photography competition for kids to enter, and special craft activity sessions.

Holiday hours

The South Canterbury Museum will be open every day of the holidays. Easter and ANZAC Day 1 – 4:30pm, otherwise Monday to Friday 10am to 4:30pm and 1:00 to 4:30pm in the weekends. Admission is free.

While you’re here you can:

  • Take part in the Museum Mystery quizzes – find the answers hidden around the Museum and win a penny to use on the old coin games!
  • Get a closer look at the Salt to Silicon photography exhibition
  • Explore our exhibitions with hundreds of things to see!
  • Find the Golden Frogand go into the draw to win a prize!
  • Come and collect our new Explorers Badge while you are here

Special craft activities

Make or do something really interesting while you’re at the Museum. These are suitable for primary-aged students aged 5 – 13, and there are limited spaces for some activities so booking is essential.  Sessions start at 10:30am and 1.30pm and run for about an hour. There is a $3.00 charge per child ($2.00 for Museum Explorers Club members – join on the day and save a dollar!).

Create your own camera  and design your own images or use some of ours to make your own filmstrip to view through the camera. Look through our Stereoscopes at some really old historical images from around the world.

Learn more about a soldier’s life by being part of a team playing this interactive game – find out how to choose the right equipment to survive on the battlefield.
